Application Process

Applying to the Master's in Math for Secondary Teachers program involves four stages.

Stage 1:  Apply to the Master's Program

Important Dates

Applications to the third cohort of the Master's program are due:
TBA - Fall 2010

Notification of participants accepted into Cohort 3 will begin TBA - December 2010

Accepted participants must apply to their graduate schools by
TBA - December 2010

Classes for Cohort 3 begin Summer 2011

A complete application includes the following:

  1. Completed Application Form.
  2. Three Letters of Recommendation with signed releases (see the Recommendation Form):
    • One from a school administrator/principal
    • One from a colleague
    • One of your choice
  3. Unofficial transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions. To assist in our review, please highlight math and math ed courses.
  4. Three typed essays—see the writing prompts in the Application Form.
  5. You may be asked to participate in a brief phone interview as part of the application process.

Deadline: Applications to the master's program must be received by TBA - Fall 2010.

»Have You Previously Applied to the Math TLC?

If you are re-applying to the Math TLC Master’s program, your unofficial transcripts are still on record with project staff, so you may omit step 3 above. If you have any questions about the application process, please email us at mathtlc@unco.edu.

Stage 2:  Accept Invitation to Participate

Accepting an invitation to join the Math TLC includes a letter of commitment from both you and your principal (if applicable).  You will be asked to submit the Participant Letter of Commitment detailing the expectations for participation and to have your principal sign an Principal/Administrator Letter of Commitment detailing the support the principal is willing to provide.

Deadline: Letters of commitment must be received by TBA - December 2010.  You should be taking action on Stage 2 and Stage 3 simultaneously.

Stage 3:  Apply for Admission to the Graduate School

The Master’s Program in Mathematics for Secondary Mathematics Teachers is being offered jointly by UNC and UW.  At UNC, you will be applying for admission to the Master of Arts in Mathematics—Teaching Emphasis.  At UW, you will be applying for admission to the Master of Science in Teaching.  You may apply to either program; you will get your degree from the university where you apply for admission. 

Note: The university to which you choose to apply will not impact the cost of the program. You will take courses from both UNC and UW and will be paying tuition to the university offering each course.

Stage 4:  Accepted into the New Cohort of the Master's Program

Once you have been accepted for admission into the Graduate School of your choice, you will be accepted into the next master's cohort and receive an official letter of acceptance into the Math TLC!
