Institution. The University of Northern Colorado, established in 1889, is a Doctoral/Research University enrolling 12,000+ graduate and undergraduate students. The School of Mathematical Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in mathematics and mathematics education, a master’s in mathematics for teachers and a PhD in Educational Mathematics. The mathematics and mathematics education faculty work collaboratively to support all degree programs offered by the school and engage in many joint scholarly activities, include a new National Science Foundation funded Mathematics Teacher Leadership Center (Math TLC).
Position. One-year postdoctoral fellow, non-tenure-track appointment in the School of Mathematical Sciences; potential for renewal for a second year. Primary focus of the position is supporting the work of the Math TLC, a collaboration between the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Wyoming. Duties will include:
- working with Colorado and Wyoming in-service mathematics teachers and potentially pre-service mathematics teachers as they learn mathematics and pedagogy,
- engaging in mathematics education research to support the research program of the Math TLC,
- working with mathematics and mathematics education faculty on the development and delivery of courses in the Masters in Mathematics for Secondary Mathematics Teachers program jointly offered by the University of Northern Colorado and the University of Wyoming,
- working with mathematics and mathematics education faculty to build and implement a program for K-12 mathematics teacher leaders.
The position includes active mentoring for the post-doc by Math TLC staff in (a) mathematics education research, (b) the professional development of mathematics teachers and teacher leaders, and (c) the use of distance delivery technologies for teaching mathematics and mathematics education. The position includes the potential for a teaching assignment of up to one mathematics or mathematics education course for pre- or in-service teachers, per semester.
Qualifications and Experience.
Required: Doctorate in either mathematics education (with a documented strong background in mathematics) OR mathematics (with a commitment to developing expertise in mathematics education research); strong potential and commitment to engaging in mathematics education research and to working with pre- and in-service K-12 mathematics teachers. Candidate must provide evidence of experience and/or potential for effective teaching.
Preferred: Experience teaching at the K-12 level, teaching and learning with diverse populations, and/or working with pre-service and in-service teachers is desirable, as is experience with grant writing. Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge of and experience with current trends in elementary or secondary school mathematics education or mathematics teacher leader development.
